Ways I can help you

  • Develop editorial products

Successful editorial products serve an audience need and an organizational goal. I can help you find that intersection, design a product that hits it, and think through your launch punchlist.

  • Conduct and apply audience research

I can help newsrooms identify their audience insight gaps, design and conduct research, and apply the insights to editorial and product decisions.

  • Refine your editorial strategy

Newsrooms know they can no longer publish everything for everyone. But what should they do instead? I can help you come up with a segmentation strategy that fits your mission and market. Read about how I did that at LAist.

  • Develop engagement strategies

At LAist, much of my work explored ways to make community engagement and audience participation a routine and sustainable part of our work. I can help you with everything from getting buy-in and setting engagement goals to how to manage engagement workflows.

  • Teach newsrooms

I am an experienced workshop facilitator and instructor on topics such as value proposition identification, designing audence-centric stories and products, conducting audience research, and designing membership programs. I also occasionally take on journalism research projects and write case studies.

  • Run communities of practice and develop venture support

I ran the Membership Puzzle Project’s Membership in News Fund for three years. I learned a lot from our wins and our mistakes on how newsrooms learn best and how they build community with each other. I can help you design similarly impactful programs.
